Dysport
- A New FDA-Approved Botox®-Alternative to Erase Wrinkles
Since FDA approval for cosmetic
use in 2002, Botox® Cosmetic (botulinum toxin Type A - a
neurotoxin) has dominated the industry. Along with tissue
fillers, Botox has created a surge of interest in the world of
non-surgical cosmetic procedures and continues to grow as
consumers avoid the high cost of surgery.
Botulinum toxin Type A is used to
relax facial muscles that create wrinkles when contracted.
Reduction or elimination of wrinkles between the eyebrows,
across the forehead, and around the outside corners of the eyes
(crow's feet) creates a smoother, younger, less stressed and
refreshed look. It's no wonder that it was the most popular
non-surgical cosmetic procedure last year. Botulimum toxin
injections are performed as a simple office procedure taking as
little as 5-10 minutes to perform. There is no downtime
involved and results start to show in just a few days.
Dysport, also a botulinum toxin
Type A, was first licensed for medical use in Europe prior to
Botox in 1990. Also, it is approved in many countries around
the world. Dysport, FDA approved in April 2009, became the
first US competitor to Botox®. Dysport, made of the same
neurotoxin - botulinum toxin Type A as Botox, has many of the
same characteristics, indications, risk and side effects. Botox
and Dysport injections have a long standing safety profile in
the US and Europe as well as other countries. The most common
concerns consumers have are adverse effects such as eyelid droop
(2%). With well-qualified injectors these complications are
rare.
What is the
difference between Dysport and Botox? Although they are both
botulinum toxin Type A, they are different drugs. They have
dosing differences. Some studies show that Dysport has a faster
onset and longer duration of action compared to Botox®.
Consumers may remain loyal to the branded name of Botox®.
However, Dysport will give it some real competition. With some
evidence of faster onset and longer duration of action, along
with being priced lower, many consumers may convert to the new
alternative to erase wrinkles especially in these economic
times. Maintaining a youthful look may be more affordable.
