Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to eliminate varicose veins and spider veins. Sclerotherapy involves an injection of a solution directly into the vein.

The solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to collapse and stick together and the blood to clot. Over time, the vessel turns into scar tissue that fades from view.

Is this safe? Are there any side effects?

Choosing Sclerotherapy as your varicose veins treatment is an excellent choice. Side effects, such as bruising, raised red areas, small skin sores, darkened skin, and multiple tiny red blood vessels usually go away within a few days.

Does it hurt?

When the salt solution is injected into the vein through a very fine needle, you may experience mild cramping and discomfort for 1 to 2 minutes. The larger the vein injected, the higher the level of pain and cramping. The discomfort is only temporary.

How long do results last?

Sclerotherapy has been proven to have an overall success rate of eliminating about 60-80% of treated veins. Veins that respond don’t generally come back, but new veins may still appear.

How often does Sclerotherapy need to be performed?

Multiple treatments may be necessary to achieve the desired results. In general, it recommended that patients wait about six weeks in between treatments. Some larger veins can take a few months to see the final results. It is crucial to make a follow-up appointment with your provider within one month after your first procedure.
